In short

For · Strained household
Urbanisation, migration, youth idleness and violence within marriage are pulling the Pakistani family apart and eroding its capacity to protect and provide.
Against · Adaptive institution
The Pakistani family is not collapsing but adapting: marriage stays near-universal while its timing, size and roles adjust to education, cities and migration.
Examiners want

◆ The urban share rose from 36.44% in 2017 to 38.88% in 2023, drawing families away from the village kin networks that sustain the joint household.▲ 2 · ✦
◆ Claim StrongThe urban share rose from 36.44% in 2017 to 38.88% in 2023, drawing families away from the village kin networks that sustain the joint household.
→ WarrantUrbanisation and mobility separate generations across places, so the co-resident joint family loses the proximity on which its authority and mutual support depend.
✦ PakistanCensus 2023 counted 13.08 million lifetime migrants, 65.40% within their own province: extended households are being split between village and city.
◆ Violence inside marriage is widespread: 24.5% of ever-married women aged 15-49 report lifetime physical or sexual partner violence.▲ 2 · ✦
◆ Claim StrongViolence inside marriage is widespread: 24.5% of ever-married women aged 15-49 report lifetime physical or sexual partner violence.
→ WarrantA family that fails to keep its members safe is failing its core protective function; partner violence at this scale signals disorganisation within marriage itself.
✦ PakistanWith 14.5% reporting partner violence in the previous 12 months, the marital unit is a site of harm for many Pakistani women, not only of support.
◆ Labour emigration removes fathers and husbands from homes: 862,625 workers registered for overseas employment in 2023.▲ 2 · ✦
◆ Claim ModerateLabour emigration removes fathers and husbands from homes: 862,625 workers registered for overseas employment in 2023.
→ WarrantWhen male earners live abroad, the household's head is absent for years, weakening paternal authority and leaving spouses and children to manage alone.
✦ PakistanFemale-headed households rose from 11% to 13%, a change the survey links to male out-migration, showing family roles being reshaped by absence.
◆ With around 37% of those aged 15-24 NEET, families must carry idle young adults far longer, straining the joint household's economic logic.▲ 2 · ✦
◆ Claim ModerateWith around 37% of those aged 15-24 NEET, families must carry idle young adults far longer, straining the joint household's economic logic.
→ WarrantA family's provider function rests on young members entering work; when a large youth cohort is outside education and jobs, dependency rises and household bargains fray.
✦ PakistanWith ages 15-29 at 26.56% of the population, the youth problem is a family problem: delayed marriage, migration pressure and intergenerational friction follow.
✕ Recorded divorce is only 0.35% of adults and 66.13% are married, while household size barely moved from 6.39 to 6.33: the family is strained, not collapsing.↺ rebutted
Way forward

Link youth skills and job programmes to family welfare, support migrant households left behind, and treat domestic violence as a public matter with trained police and reporting channels.

Terms and theories

Terms to define

Family: a kin group bound by marriage, blood or adoption that shares residence, resources and socialisation. Joint family: several generations under one head; nuclear family: a couple and their children.

Theories that help (3)
  • Functionalism (Parsons): Industrialisation favours the isolated nuclear family, which specialises in socialisation and emotional support as other functions pass to the state and market. Serves “Adaptive institution”.
  • Social disorganisation theory: Rapid change weakens the norms and controls that bind primary groups, producing conflict, deviance and breakdown within families. Serves “Strained household”.
  • Feminist theory: The family is a site of gendered labour and power in which women's unpaid work sustains the household and men's advantage. Serves “Slow, unequal change”.
